Exploding pagers

Exploding pagers
"It demonstrates Israel's ability to infiltrate its adversaries in a remarkably dramatic way," said Paul Pillar, a 28-year veteran of the U.S. intelligence community, mainly at the CIA.

I think it is time to dispel some misinformation put out by the so-called "Health Ministry" of Lebanon.

Fact: Hezbollah fighters have been using pagers as a low-tech means of communication in an attempt to evade Israeli location-tracking, two sources familiar with the group's operations told Reuters this year.

Israeli intelligence took advantage of that move by intervening somewhere along the supply line to turn the pagers into explosives which could be detonated at a time of their choosing. That time was yesterday, as the pagers received a message at 3:30 p.m. that appeared to be from Hezbollah’s leadership, officials said. Instead, it was a trigger — the pagers beeped for several seconds, then exploded. The attack left Hezbollah fighters and others bloodied, hospitalized or dead. One Hezbollah official said the detonation was the group's "biggest security breach" since the Gaza conflict began. One reason that Hezbollah was taken by complete surprise was that Israel wisely did not tell the Biden administration. An Iranian ambassador was also injured. For some reason he was also using a pager.

The blasts killed 11 people and injured more than 2,700, according to "Lebanese officials." Those same officials identified 8 of the dead as Hezbollah fighters.

In other news:

In a very friendly interview with Black journalists (in contrast to the hostile one given by the same group to Donald Trump,), Kamala Harris condemned Trump’s disputed claim that Haitian immigrants in Ohio were eating pets. Something that Trump must have read on social media. Harris dodged the only real question she got when asked if she supported Roe v. Wade’s restrictions on abortion after the second trimester, saying only that she supported restoring “the protections” of Roe.

Former governors: seven Republicans, and 12 Democrats urged sitting governors to certify the results after the 2024 vote. I wonder how they'll feel about that if Trump wins?

An Ohio woman regrets sharing a rumor that a Haitian neighbor might have taken another neighbor’s cat.

Large parts of Brazil are on fire: In August, wildfires burned down an area the size of Costa Rica.

Instagram will add stricter restrictions for teenagers. Users under 18 will be made private by default, and the app will not send them notifications at night.

The Biden administration pushed its decision on whether to let a Japanese company buy U.S. Steel until after the 2024 election.

Today, America’s central bank will almost certainly cut borrowing costs from a two-decade high. More cuts are likely before the end of the year.

No government smart enough to come up with this would be dumb enough to share information with the Biden administration and give them a chance to protect anti-semitic terrorists.

I'm sure Blinken would do anything to get a cease-fire deal. I can see them warning Hezbollah.

There are heated statements from both sides, though the right seems to be winning by shear numbers.  The trouble is that you also need to look at those that are listening to those statements.  There are a lot more ammosexuals on the right just itching for an excuse to whip out their AK's and start mowing down those that they perceive slights from.

Well, exploding pagers are the latest bright, shiny object in the news grabbing attention.  Hasn't anyone asked themselves 'why now?'  Israel just burned a huge asset.  Why?  That unasked and unanswered question is likely the real news story.

There's a whole queue of promised retaliation against Israel.  The biggest being retaliation for the Israeli assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran (under the noses of Iran's military, intelligence, and government).  Was the pager operation intended to disrupt an attack sponsored by Iran?  Was the pager operation intended to send a message to the United States, to Europe, to the UN, to all the other meddlers in Israel's affairs?

IMO Israel is sending the message to all the meddlers trying to pressure Israel to score political points back home.  If Iran wants a wider war then Israel is ready.  Bring it.  But Iran is going to have to fight its own battles.  Israel owns Iran's proxies.  Now there's no way to save Hamas.  There's no way to force Israel to make concessions.  And there won't be a two-state solution unless it fulfills Israel's terms and conditions.

Israel just told the entire world that this is now Israel's war.  It's not an American war.  It's not a European war.  It's not an oil war.  It's not about a two-state solution.  It's not about Middle East peace.  It's Israel's war and it's all about Israel.
