Former President Trump is safe after gunshots were fired 'in his vicinity,' campaign says

Former President Donald Trump was safe after the Secret Service fired at a gun-toting man outside Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, Sunday, sources told Fox News.

Authorities are treating the case as a potential assassination attempt, and arrested a suspect, a U.S. official told Fox News. The man, who was not immediately identified, was allegedly armed with a rifle when agents fired at him.

"This does not appear to be some random guy with an AK-47 walking outside Trump's club," the official added.

Fox News' Lucas Tomlinson confirmed that the Secret Service opened fire after they saw a man lift an AK-47. The suspect fled in a car, but was quickly apprehended, authorities said.

Trump was on the fifth hole of his course when the shots rang out, prompting his protective detail to swarm him and usher him to the safety of the clubhouse. The incident may prove to be the second attempt on the former president's life in just two months.

Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity, citing local law enforcement, said the suspect's rifle was discovered in the bushes. Four shots were fired, Hannity also confirmed through local law enforcement. Hannity said Trump's initial reaction inside the clubhouse was to make sure everyone was okay.

Fox News host Bret Baier also spoke to Trump, who praised the Secret Service for acting quickly. Trump reaffirmed to Baier that he was fine and there was no evidence any shots were near him or hitting near him.

Video

"Tell everybody I am fine and the Secret Service did a great job," Trump told Baier.

The Secret Service is working closely with authorities and investigating the situation, and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has been briefed.

"The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe," the agency confirmed in a post on X.

The White House acknowledged the incident.

"The President and Vice President have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team," the White House said in a statement.

Fox News Digital confirmed that the Attorney General has been briefed, is monitoring the situation, and is receiving regular updates following the security incident at Trump International Golf Course.

This latest shooting near Trump is nearly two months to the date of the assassination attempt on the former president's life. Trump was shot in the ear during a July 13 rally in Butler, Pa. A man attending the rally, volunteer Fire Department Cat. Corey Comperatore, was killed by the gunman, who was shot dead by a Secret Service sniper.

Fox News Digital confirmed that the Trump National Golf Club is on lockdown as a precaution.

This is a developing story, please check back here for updates.

I think he just got another bump.

It's only news when someone tries to kill a Democrat. When a random loon shoots a democratic congresswoman over her refusal to discuss grammar and lucid dreams, it's a national emergency that the media and popular culture will spend weeks blaming Sarah Palin and Republicans.

When a someone tries to assassinate a a Supreme Court justice, Republican congressmen, and now a Presidential  candidate twice in 60 days,  it's a blip to be ignored after a few hours. .

... sounds like an inside job to me. a desperate act by the campaign to get in front of the negative news cycle created by his disastrous debate performance and the continuing fallout from his VP's "eating cats and dogs" xenophobic memes that are dominating the news cycle.

What with the hate campaign being carried out by the left against him for the last four years,

Blah, blah blah.  Come on Greg. First it was Lincoln, then Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, Hillary, Trump, Biden and Trump again.

It's a shame that campaigning has come to this by the design of Newt Gingrich, Karl Rowe, Grover Norquist and others.

Ok, quote something from the CNN article you linked to that indicates Routh is a leftist.   He doesnt like Trump, that appears obvious, but that doesnt make him a leftist.   He wanted Ramaswamy and Haley to beat Trump in the primaries, but that is not within a million miles of making him a leftist.

from what i read , they were actively scouting 2 holes ahead of the group playing checking everything .

I wasn't disagreeing with you, I was just asking you to agree with my concept of what your opinion was, which was right that it wasn't a Kosher situation.

from what i read , they were actively scouting 2 holes ahead of the group playing checking everything .

After hearing everything said about the Secret Service after the last attempt on Trump's life, I assume they would tend to be extra-vigilant.

You had some on the right saying what a shitty job the SS did (and who can forget some of those videos) and you had some on the left claiming the SS was in on a fake assassination attempt.

They got hammered from all directions.

speculation is the shooter was sighting his rifle when an SS agent saw the rifle barrel poking thru the chain link fence and fired.

I would be betting both .

i think it is an insult to actual snipers to consider the 2 so far in the same category , gunmen is a more apt description of these 2 .

im just glad those that have tried so far are somewhat firearms illiterate about firearms .

i do think there will be more attempts .

Okay, then if they weren't seasoned snipers, they were awful stupid to even try, although I now realize only the first one actually took the shot, and he wasn't that incompetent to be so close to succeeding.  Two sniper movies I've seen recently (and I did enjoy watching them) were Shooter and Jack Reacher so I guess I'm into thinking about snipers.  Had I been the right age during my lifetime to serve in a war that Canada was involved in I probably would have been a sniper myself.

"i do think there will be more attempts "

It's a scary thought.  Even though I think Trump is a horrible person, he does not deserve to be assassinated, jailed maybe, but not assassinated.

thats the thing about political assassinations , one doesnt have to be smart nor the act itself to be considered smart  if they think their goals will be achieved  and further what they want .

Yeah it is a scary thought , but look at all the political murders that take place because someone thinks eliminating one person betters their sides chances  or their hold on power.

There is no place on the planet that is safe from such thinking when it comes to politics .

Another you might want to watch is gemini  man with will smith . that one has a twist in it for you , nuff said .

Just remember , movies have a tendency to use artistic license, not everything you see in them are actually able to be done .

Assassinations.  Unfortunately, America has had to suffer too many that have succeeded, or have been attempted.  Even though I'm a Canadian, JFK's assassination had a deep impact on me.

"artistic licence"  Of course, I'd be in the looney bin if I believed all to be accurate or perfect or even true at all.  But fantasy and fantasizing are so much fun, are they not?  Escaping from reality now and then isn't so bad (as long as it doesn't become permanent).

JFK's assassination had a deep impact on me.

I was a year and a half old when that happened , not old enough to remember it , but i do remember the people older around me , expressing the feelings of something lost , a promise left unfulfilled, and things left un delivered , top that off with growing up in the Boston area , there is a great mythos about him , and his brother .

The things that might have been , it still exists today to a degree , but not as strong as when i was younger .

the only sure thing that will happen is that the taxpayers are going to be stuck with a million dollar security bill every time that traitorous pile of shit wants to play golf, and all because of the incendiary bullshit that erupts from the biggest hole in his empty skull.

Blaming Trump for crackpots taking shots at him is like blaming a rape on a woman because she wore provocative clothing. Not smart or believable.

We've had the same bill for the one currently in the WH and his cackling sidekick.

No... either he will be elected and provided all the security that entails OR he will not be elected and the rhetoric will die down and he'll receive the basic SS as per SOP. He can always afford to stiff some private security company for more protection if he thinks he needs it.
